SL and virtualisation

In discussion with Paul Walk and Liz Lyon of UKOLN after my presentation to staff at the University of Bath earlier on today we talked about the need for SL to scale rather better than it does now and wondered whether and if the SL grid architecture could be made more suitable for approaches based on virtualisation. This might allow for the capacity of a sim to grow dynamically in response to short term demands for power, e.g. when a large meeting is taking place.

Jeff Barr's report of Joe Miller's Catalyst presentation makes some similar points (see towards the end of the post) as well as providing some interesting stats about SL that I've not seen before.

Also note the positive sounding news about opening up the grid to other sim providers and references to emerging standards.
